چکیده

This article reviews previously described methods of fresh tissue sampling from radical prostatectomy specimens for research and describes a method used in Oxford which is simple, logical and cost effective. The method utilises a systematic zonal approach to tissue procurement in order to meet the increasing requirement for research samples with detailed morphological information such as zone of origin, tumour stage and Gleason grade. The described method involves punch biopsy sampling from a 4mm thick transverse slice cut 8mm superior to the apex. 9 biopsies are taken from each specimen in the following zonal distribution: Mid anterior, right lateral, right peripheral zone lateral, right peripheral zone mid, left peripheral zone mid, left peripheral zone lateral, left lateral, left transition zone and right transition zone. The method was validated by successfully sampling tumour in 7 out of 8 cases (88%). In 6 of the positive cases, tumour was present in more than 1 punch biopsy. The mean time from receipt of the specimen to completion of the biopsy freezing was 23.5 minutes. Tumour stage, zone and Gleason grade were determined for all positive biopsies. All cases were reported to RCPath guidelines with no compromising of margins. A logical systematic method of fresh tissue sampling from radical prostatectomy specimens is presented, which balances the need for accurate routine histopathological reporting with the requirement for increasingly complex research samples to be taken with attention to morphological details such as zone and stage.

Correlation between Gleason scores in needle biopsy and corresponding radical prostatectomy specimens. A twelve-year review.

Background: Presence of discordance between the Gleason score on needle biopsy and the score of radical prostatectomy specimen is common and universal. In this study, we determined the accuracy of Gleason grading of biopsies in predicting histological grading of radical prostatectomy specimens and the degree of overgrading and undergrading of prostatic adenocarcinoma i...

Exploring the Effect of PSA Density and Prostate Size on Concordance of TRUS Biopsy Result with Radical Prostatectomy

Background and Objective: Today’s, the Gleason grading system is well known as the world’s most commonly used histological system for prostate cancer. It provides significant information about the prognosis. This prospective paper assessed the correlation of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy and radical prostatectomy specimens in terms of Gleason scores. In this matter, the effect of ...

بررسی مقایسه‌ای بین نمره گلیسون بیوپسی‌های پروستات و نمونه‌های رادیکال پروستاتکتومی

The present study was undertaken to compare the gleason score and histologic grade of needle biopsy specimens to those of radical prostatectomy(RP) specimen to examine how accurately biopsy specimens reflect the corresponding excised specimens. In this comparative-descriptive study, gleason scoring was made on the needle biopsy specimens from 57 patients with prostate cancer and then ...

Handling of Radical Prostatectomy Specimens: Total Embedding with Large-Format Histology

A problem when handling radical prostatectomy specimens (RPS) is that cancer is often not visible at gross examination, and the tumor extent is always underestimated by the naked eye. The challenge is increased further by the fact that prostate cancer is a notoriously multifocal and heterogeneous tumor. For the pathologist, the safest method to avoid undersampling of cancer is evidently that th...

Endothelin-1 expression in prostate needle biopsy specimens correlated with aggressiveness of prostatic cancer

Background & Objective: As the prostate adenocarcinoma is one of the most common malignant tumors in males, looking for a marker to effectively predict aggressiveness and metastatic potential in an apparently localized cancer in initial needle biopsy specimens can help the clinicians to make more appropriate decision for treatment, planning, and choosing appropriate ta...
